Firefighters save boat trippers stuck next to dam in Indianapolis
Firefighters rescued a group of boat trippers stranded next to a dam in Indianapolis.
Authorities reported that a group of women on a pontoon boat became stuck dangerously close to the edge of a dam at 64th Street and Westfield Boulevard on May 18.
Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) Tactical Team 14 responded to the scene near the low-head dam in Broad Ripple around 3:35 pm.
The boat owner said they were heading to a popular destination when the water suddenly became shallow, and the boat's motor failed. The strong current pulled the vessel within inches of going over the dam.
Another boater and his friend attempted to assist but had to back off and await emergency responders.
Upon arrival, firefighters established visual contact with the stranded group and confirmed no injuries or medical concerns.
IFD Dive Commander Captain Bryan Fleck used hand signals to communicate his phone number to the group. Once contact was made, he asked if they had personal flotation devices.
The holidaymakers had them but did not know how to use them. Captain Bryan walked them through the process over the phone.
The watercraft was stuck in shallow water, only 2 to 3ft. Firefighters moved in and quickly brought everyone to safety.
The Indianapolis Fire Department later reminded all boaters to plan their routes carefully and be aware of potential hazards, such as low-head dams.
Authorities also emphasised the importance of carrying and knowing how to use personal flotation devices, as required by state law.
