The Princess of Wales launched a Royal Navy warship during a ceremony in Scotland.

Catherine, accompanied by her husband, His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, was welcomed by the Second Sea Lord, Vice Admiral Sir Martin Connell.

She carried out the traditional ceremony of smashing a bottle of whisky against the hull, a gesture meant to bring good fortune to the vessel and its crew.

The Princess said: 'I name this ship Glasgow. May God bless her and all who serve in her.'

HMS Glasgow is the first of eight advanced Type 26 frigates, designed to lead the Royal Navy into a new era of naval warfare.
