Puerto Varas, Chile - May 25, 2025 On May 25, a tornado ripped through the southern town of Puerto Varas, causing widespread damage and injuring eight people. Marco Antonio captured the tornado’s formation on video at 3:11 p.m. The footage shows debris floating as winds gathered force. He said he heard the typical rumble in the sky but didn’t expect a tornado to form. The EF-1 tornado brought winds between 138 and 187 km/h. It damaged up to 250 homes, ripping off roofs and toppling power poles, trees, and vehicles. More than 12,500 people lost electricity. Six residents were forced into shelters. No fatalities were reported. Mayor Tomás Gárate said it was an unprecedented event for the town. “There are many damages to houses, buildings, and power lines,” he said. “We do not know of any deaths.” A red alert was declared, and Monday classes were suspended. Social media videos showed the tornado sweeping streets and tearing through infrastructure. The Chilean Meteorological Service blamed a cold front for the storm. President Gabriel Boric Font confirmed regional teams were on-site to assess damage and clear debris. Senapred confirmed that affected residents are being sheltered and the injured have been treated.
