Puerto Varas, Chile - May 25, 2025 A rare tornado struck the city on Sunday, leaving a trail of destruction across downtown and nearby neighborhoods. The tornado hit around 3:30 p.m. with wind speeds between 138 and 178 km/h. It has been preliminarily rated as an EF-1 by Chile’s Meteorological Agency. X user @arkdoee posted a video showing fallen electricity poles, scattered debris, and damaged cars in the aftermath. Eyewitness clips captured rooftops being ripped off multi-story buildings, including what appeared to be hotels in the city center. Another video filmed inside a store showed calm conditions suddenly broken by a power outage and violent winds, sending debris flying. Supermarkets were left in chaos, with shelves toppled and goods thrown across aisles. One home appeared nearly destroyed. The full extent of injuries or casualties remains unknown as authorities have not released official figures. Tornadoes are highly uncommon in Chile. The last major event occurred in 2019, when Los Ángeles and Chillán were hit by rare back-to-back tornadoes.
