Driver Passes Out Drunk at Intersection, Crashes While Fleeing
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — A man who passed out drunk behind the wheel in the middle of an intersection over the weekend was arrested after attempting to flee and crashing into a parked vehicle, Commerce City Police said.
The incident occurred at East 96th Avenue and Telluride Street, where officers found the man unconscious in his running vehicle. In preparation for a possible escape attempt, officers deployed a tire deflation device and blocked surrounding traffic.
When officers managed to wake the driver, he attempted to drive away but quickly crashed into an unoccupied parked vehicle just north of the intersection. He was taken into custody shortly thereafter.
The driver, whose face was blurred in the department’s public video because he has not yet been formally charged, is facing multiple charges including DUI, Impeding Traffic, and Careless Driving.
In a strongly worded statement on Facebook, Commerce City Police warned: “Don’t you dare risk the lives of others on the road—and frankly your own life—by getting behind the wheel so intoxicated you can't even keep your eyes open. Don’t. Do. It. Here.”
