The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) crew treated a family that was rescued from choppy seas by a surfer in Scotland.

Dunbar RNLI volunteers saved three individuals caught in a powerful rip current at Tyninghame Beach on Saturday May 24.

The UK Coastguard alerted the lifeboat team at 2:40 pm after two holidaymakers were seen struggling in the water. The inshore D-class lifeboat David Lauder launched ten minutes later.

By 3:05 pm, three people had been pulled from the water by a local surfer. The victims required immediate medical attention.

Dunbar's all-weather lifeboat was also deployed but was stood down once all casualties were confirmed safe on the beach.

One casualty was airlifted to the hospital by the Coastguard helicopter, while the others were treated on-site by Dunbar RNLI volunteers.

The Scottish Ambulance Service, Police Scotland, and North Berwick Coastguard also assisted at the scene.

Dunbar RNLI helm Jamie Forrester said: 'This incident shows how easy a simple trip to the beach can turn serious. If it hadn't been for the swift actions of the surfer, this could have been a very different outcome.'

The crew was stood down at 3:55 pm, and the lifeboat returned to Dunbar Harbour.

The RNLI saves lives at sea through its 24-hour search and rescue services around the UK and Ireland. With 238 lifeboat stations and over 240 lifeguard units across the UK and the Channel Islands, its volunteers are dedicated to maritime safety.
