Chinese farmer grows record-breaking watermelon weighing almost 100kg
On May 24, at the 37th Beijing Daxing Watermelon Festival’s Guoyuan Cup National Watermelon and Melon Competition, a 195.5-jin (97.75 kg) watermelon grown by farmer Xie Zhengjiang from Beizhangke Village, Panggezhuang Town, Daxing District, was awarded the title of “King of Watermelons.” This also set a new weight record in the history of the competition.
At this year's competition, 322 teams from eight provinces including Beijing, Shandong, Tianjin, and Hebei brought over 1,200 melons to compete. Six awards were presented: Large Watermelon Weight Group, Medium Watermelon Comprehensive Group, Small Watermelon Comprehensive Group, Melon Comprehensive Group, New Variety Group, and Creative Watermelon Award.
Xie Zhengjiang, 58, is a watermelon farmer from Panggezhuang and has been growing watermelons for over 30 years. This year marks his seventh consecutive appearance at the competition and his fifth time earning the “King of Watermelons” title. Since he began competing, the “weight” of his watermelons has doubled—from 90 jin (45 kg) in his first year to over 190 jin now. He grew the “King of Watermelons” in 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2024 as well.
Xie said: “I’ve participated in the national watermelon and melon competition seven times in total, winning five championships and two runner-up titles. I’ve gained some experience in growing big watermelons over the years.”
Known as the “Hometown of Chinese Watermelons,” Panggezhuang Town has a long history of watermelon cultivation and is renowned across the country.
