Third wave of flash floods submerges roads in northeast Thailand
A third wave of flash floods submerged roads as water levels rebounded after a drought in northeast Thailand.
Video shows muddy runoff surging from mountains after heavy rain in Nakhon Ratchasima on May 25.
The flash floods damaged farmlands and engulfed roads. Police set up checkpoints to warn drivers of the fast-flowing currents.
Sukon Temyingyot, who oversees a local dam, said: 'As of May 26, the Lam Takhong Dam is at 61.024 million cubic metres or 19.4 per cent of its total capacity.
'There is continuous rainfall and runoff from the north flowing into the reservoir, but it still has sufficient storage capacity.'
The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation had issued a flash flood warning across 52 Thai provinces.
The severe weather was caused by a stronger southwest monsoon and a monsoon trough passing over northern Thailand and the upper part of southern Thailand.
Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are nearing their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
