At approximately 11:57 am on May 27, an explosion occurred in a workshop at Youdao Chemical Co., Ltd. in Gaomi City, Shandong Province, according to nearby residents.

Footage from the scene shows thick black smoke billowing hundreds of metres into the sky. The powerful shockwave shattered the glass of multiple buildings and caused pipelines to leak an unidentified gas.

Local business owners reported feeling a strong tremor even several kilometres away from the blast site. Some buildings sustained significant damage, with glass storefronts shattered.

A nearby restaurant owner said that around noon, she suddenly heard a loud bang, and the windows in her shop were blown out, leaving shattered glass all over the floor. She saw black smoke rising above the chemical industrial park roughly 1 kilometres away. Shortly after, police and fire trucks arrived on the scene.

Following the incident, China’s Ministry of Emergency Management dispatched a working group to the site and coordinated medical experts to assist with treating the injured.

Gaomi People’s Hospital and Gaomi Municipal Hospital confirmed they had received multiple injured individuals from the explosion.

As of now, rescue operations are ongoing, and the exact number of casualties is still being determined.
