This is the dramatic moment a fisherman stranded at sea for six hours was rescued off the coast of southern Thailand.

Maw Saw Hton Oo, from neighbouring Myanmar, was trawling for fish when his boat was battered by strong winds near Satun, at around 3 am on May 23.

He was said to have been thrown off the vessel and swept away by large waves.

Watchers from the Satun Inbound and Outbound Ship Control Centre found him drifting on the currents and notified the marine police for help.

Footage shows an officer jumping into the sea before grabbing onto the fisherman. The pair were then hoisted onboard the rescue boat using a rope.

Vice Admiral Suwat Donsakul, director of the Maritime Interests Protection Centre Region 3, said: 'Upon receiving the report, the team used the high-speed operation vessel MCO 4006 to carry out a search and rescue operation.

'At 8:45 am, the fisherman was found near the reported coordinates. We believe he fell into the sea before daylight, when the waves were strong.'
