US: SpaceX's Starship fails mid-flight in ninth test mission
SHOTLIST TEXAS, UNITED STATES (RELEASED ON MAY 27, 2025) (USERS MUST CREDIT “SPACEX” HANDOUT, MUST NOT OBSCURE LOGO ---EDITORIAL USE ONLY) 1. VARIOUS OF SPACEX STARSHIP BEING LAUNCHED RISING IN AIR TEXAS, UNITED STATES (RELEASED ON MAY 27, 2025) (USERS MUST CREDIT “SPACEX” HANDOUT, MUST NOT OBSCURE LOGO ---EDITORIAL USE ONLY) - SpaceX's Starship, the massive rocket designed for future Moon and Mars missions, suffered another setback during its latest test flight on Tuesday, losing control and breaking apart approximately 30 minutes after liftoff. The 403-foot (123-meter) rocket, the most powerful ever built, blasted off from SpaceX's Starbase launch site in southern Texas. This marked the ninth test flight for Starship and the first to use a recycled booster. However, the mission fell short of its primary objectives when the spacecraft tumbled out of control and underwent what SpaceX described as a "rapid unscheduled disassembly" – a euphemism for an in-flight explosion. "Teams will continue to review data and work toward our next flight test," SpaceX said in an online statement. This latest failure follows two previous Starship test flights earlier this year that also ended in explosions, scattering debris over nearby areas and forcing commercial airlines to alter their flight paths. In January, debris from a failed launch rained down over the Turks and Caicos Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. Writing by Sibel Uygun
