China's southern regions experienced their strongest rainfall this year, from Tuesday to Thursday, with disaster risks heightened as storms hit recently affected areas, according to the national observatory. Regions south of the Yangtze River and the south China region have been battered by heavy rains, with some locations expecting severe rainstorms. The rainfalls are expected to decrease significantly on Thursday, although scattered heavy rain and local rainstorms may still occur in some places. Starting from Tuesday, east China's Jiangxi Province has experienced a new round of heavy rain, recording an average of 24.5 mm rainfall in 24 hours. Heavy rain was also reported at 155 meteorological observation stations throughout the province, with Anfu County experiencing the highest rainfall of 96.6 mm. The province issued an alert for risks of geological disasters and initiated a Level-IV emergency response to major meteorological disasters on Tuesday. Many places in Jiangxi maintained blue alerts for heavy rain on Wednesday. China has a four-tier flood-control emergency response system, with Level I being the highest level; as well as a four-tier weather-warning system, with red representing the most severe warning, followed by orange, yellow and blue. The cities of Nanchang and Fuzhou in Jiangxi also experienced heavy rain on Wednesday, resulting in poor visibility that affected traffic. In response, local authorities have ramped up inspections to clear the drainage systems on roads and intensified checks on hydropower and drainage stations along rivers, as the heavy rainfall has caused water levels to rise. On Wednesday, most regions in east China's Fujian Province also experienced heavy rain, according to the local meteorological observatory. The province's flood control and drought relief headquarters launched a Level-IV emergency response on the same day. Two districts in Sanya City of south China's Hainan Province have experienced continuous heavy rainfall since Tuesday morning, with total accumulation exceeding 200 mm at one point, as registered by multiple weather stations. On the same day, Lingshui Li Autonomous County and Sanya issued red alerts for heavy rain, prompting primary and secondary schools, as well as kindergartens, to announce a half-day suspension of classes.
