Military police stop illegal mining area in Ecuador
Military police shut down an illegal mining operation in Ecuador.
Officials said the army carried out the operation in the sector of Nambija Bajo, located in Cumbaratza Parish within the Zamora Canton.
Authorities said the intervention aimed to curb illegal mineral extraction and prevent environmental contamination, particularly affecting the Zamora River.
During the raid, military personnel confiscated three excavators, two suction motors, and two Z-type mineralised material classifiers.
The force said: 'The Ecuadorian Army works to ensure the safety of Ecuadorians, safeguard natural resources, and protect the environment.'
Historically, Nambija Bajo gained prominence during the 1980s gold rush, earning it the nickname 'Puerto Minero'. The area's rich alluvial deposits have long attracted legal and illegal mining activity.
