Chemical plant explosion leaves five dead and six missing in China
A chemical plant explosion in China has left at least five people dead and six others missing.
The blast happened in a workshop at Shandong Youdao Chemical in Gaomi City, Shandong Province, on May 27.
Residents reported hearing a powerful blast shortly before noon on Tuesday, which shook nearby homes.
More than 230 emergency personnel and 55 fire engines were dispatched to tackle the blaze. The Ministry of Emergency Management also sent a working group and additional rescue teams to assist.
The explosion sent a massive plume of smoke billowing into the sky and injured at least 19 others.
Footage shows a huge fireball erupting into the air from the scene. Officials said the cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
Shandong Youdao was established in 2019 in the Gaomi Renhe Chemical Industrial Park. The company employs more than 300 people and specialises in developing, producing, and selling pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and related chemicals.
