HUNDREDS OF HALAL-ELIGIBLE LIVESTOCK WEST JAVA, INDONESIA - MAY 29: Livestock markets in Indonesia are buzzing with activity as Muslims prepare to celebrate Eid al-Adha, the Islamic festival of sacrifice. At Jonggol Market in Bogor, West Java, hundreds of halal-eligible livestock—including sheep, goats, rams, and cattle—are brought in twice a week from nearby cities. --- In Islamic practice, halal refers to what is permissible under religious law. When it comes to meat, animals must meet specific criteria for humane treatment and slaughter in order to be considered lawful for consumption and sacrifice.--- The market, known for its lively bargaining and bustling atmosphere, draws buyers from across the region seeking animals to sacrifice as part of the religious tradition. Prices vary depending on the size and breed of the livestock, with negotiation between sellers and buyers playing a key role in the sales process. Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice, is the one of the most important Islamic holidays. It commemorates Prophet Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son at Allah’s command and marks the culmination of the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia. During the festival, many Muslims slaughter animals, including goats, sheep, cows, or camels, and donate portions of the meat to the needy. This year’s holiday will begin on June 6.
