RNLI save two beachgoers stranded by incoming tide in Glamorgan
The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) crew rescued a pair of beachgoers stranded by an incoming tide in Glamorgan.
The holidaymakers became trapped beneath cliffs between Ogmore and Southerndown on Sunday, May 11, prompting assistance from emergency responders.
Both RNLI lifeboats, the Atlantic 85 Rose of the Shires and the D class lifeboat Hugo Missen, were launched swiftly at around 2:27 pm.
Chris Missen, Helm of the Atlantic 85 lifeboat, said: 'The casualties weren't local to the area and were unsure of their precise location. We had to get there quickly in order to locate them. Thankfully, shortly after we arrived on scene and began searching from Ogmore Deeps – we spotted them below the cliffs near West Farm, Southerndown.
'The fact they had a means of calling 999 and asking for the Coastguard in this time critical rescue was a lifeline. They stayed where they were with some distance between themselves and the water whilst they waited for us to arrive.'
The RNLI reminds visitors to check tide times and weather conditions before heading to the coast and to always carry a mobile phone in case of emergency.
Sarah Lewis from the RNLI Water Safety Team noted that many people are unaware of how rapidly tide conditions can change, particularly during spring tides and busy holidays.
She said: 'Anyone heading to the coast is reminded of the importance of staying safe and checking the weather and tide times. If you can't interpret the tide timetable, always seek local advice and stay alert.'
The RNLI saves lives at sea through its 24-hour search and rescue services around the UK and Ireland. With 238 lifeboat stations and over 240 lifeguard units across the UK and the Channel Islands, its volunteers are dedicated to maritime safety.
