..GAZA, PALESTINE - MAY 28, 2025: A six-year-old Palestinian girl in Gaza was left badly burned and orphaned after an Israeli airstrike hit a school sheltering displaced families, killing 31 people including her entire family, on Monday (May 26). Hanin al-Wadiye and her family had taken refuge at the Fehmi al-Jargawi School, deemed a "safe zone" amid ongoing Israeli military operations, before an airstrike hit the building, leaving Hanin the only survivor from her family. At least 31 displaced people, including 18 children and six women, were burned to death, and scores were injured in the fire caused by the Israeli strike. Hanin suffered second- and third-degree burns on her face, arms, and legs. Her eyes have swollen shut from the injuries. Israel has kept Gaza crossings closed to food, medical, and humanitarian aid since March 2, deepening an already severe humanitarian crisis in the enclave, according to government, human rights, and international reports. According to Gaza’s government media office, more than 1,600 Palestinian children have been killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza since October 2023. Rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, the Israeli army has pursued a brutal offensive against Gaza since October 2023, killing over 54,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war crimes against defenseless civilians in the enclave.
