For about ten days, a 600-meter-high cliff face, rising to an elevation of approximately 3,300 meters, had been gradually destabilizing, triggering rockfalls. These falling rocks accumulated on the glacier, adding significant weight. The added stress ultimately destabilized the glacier itself, resulting in a massive avalanche of ice, rock, and mud." 5. VARIOUS CLOSE SHOTS OF WARNING SIGN 6. (SOUNDBITE) (French) RAVANEL SAYING: "It destroyed the village of Blatten and formed a natural dam, which has since created a rapidly growing lake—expanding by 80 centimeters every hour. Authorities are taking the threat seriously, as a sudden breach of the dam could release a torrent of water into the valley below." 7. DETAIL FROM BOSSONS GLACIER 8. VARIOUS OF VIEWS OF BOSSON GLACIER AND NATURE OF CHAMONIX CHAMONIX, FRANCE - MAY 29: Following a deadly landslide that wiped out the Swiss village of Blatten, attention has turned to the French alpine town of Chamonix, where scientists are closely monitoring two glaciers that could pose a similar threat. The Bossons and Taconnaz glaciers, perched above Chamonix on the opposite side of Mont Blanc, are under year-round surveillance by glaciologists from the Edytem Laboratory. The tragedy in Switzerland has underscored the importance of their work in detecting early signs of glacial instability. “What happened in Switzerland yesterday afternoon wasn’t a single event, but a series of interconnected phenomena,” said Ludovic Ravanel, a glaciologist at the Edytem Laboratory. He explained that for roughly 10 days, a 600-meter-high rock face at around 3,300 meters had been gradually destabilizing, triggering a cascade of rockfalls. “These falling rocks accumulated on the glacier, adding significant weight. The added stress ultimately destabilized the glacier itself, resulting in a massive avalanche of ice, rock, and mud,” he said. The landslide destroyed Blatten and formed a natural dam, creating a fast-growing lake. “It destroyed the village of Blatten and formed a natural dam, which has since created a rapidly growing lake—expanding by 80 centimeters every hour,” Ravanel warned. Authorities fear a sudden rupture of the dam could unleash catastrophic flooding downstream. With climate change accelerating glacial melt and terrain instability, alpine towns like Chamonix are under increasing pressure to enhance monitoring systems and improve emergency preparedness. Local officials are reviewing contingency plans and raising public awareness as scientists continue to track changes in the high-altitude landscape. Earlier in the day, Authorities in Switzerland remained on high alert after a massive glacier collapse buried much of the village of Blatten in the Lotschental valley. With further landslides still possible, authorities are focusing on risk assessment and limiting the number of people in vulnerable zones. Writing by Nur Zeynep Dukmen
