Phoenix, United States - May 29, 2025 05/28/2025 11:00 pm GMT-0700 PHOENIX, Ariz. – An Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) trooper attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a black Nissan GTR. The driver was observed traveling in excess of 100 mph on northbound I-17 near Van Buren Street around 11:00 p.m. A pursuit was initiated after the suspect refused to yield to the trooper. DPS quickly requested assistance from the Phoenix police air unit. The air unit responded to the area and located the suspect as he exited the I-17 at Indian School Road. With the suspect now on surface streets and with the police helicopter overhead, troopers disengaged from pursuit. The Phoenix Police Department Air Unit tracked the suspect from above while ground units consisting of DPS troopers and Phoenix Police Tactical Support Bureau officers followed the suspect at a safe distance. The suspect led law enforcement east on Indian School Road before turning south onto 7th Avenue. The suspect eventually made his way back onto the I-17 near 7th Avenue. The suspect exited the I-17 at 16th Street a short time later and began fleeing southbound. The suspect then made an eastbound turn onto Wier Avenue from 16th Street and attempted to back the GTR into the driveway of a residence. Ground units quickly converged on the suspect. The first trooper to arrive at the scene utilized the push bumper of his patrol vehicle to pin the suspect's GTR in place. Additional troopers and Phoenix police resources arrived moments later, and a high-risk traffic stop was initiated. The male driver was taken into custody without further incident. No injuries were reported. One DPS vehicle sustained damage from pinning the GTR in place. Troopers used a hook and chain attached to a patrol pickup truck to bend the damaged DPS bumper back into place, allowing troopers to transport the damaged cruiser to the nearby DPS station for inspection. The driver was booked for felony flight, and his vehicle was impounded.
