...TRIPOLI, LIBYA - MAY 30, 2025: Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Martyrs' Square in Tripoli on Friday, May 23, to protest against the Libyan government, following violent clashes in the capital. Protesters carried banners that read, "We are the people, we are the legitimate ones; there is no legitimacy outside the people," held up red cards, and chanted anti-government slogans. In the square, where approximately 500 demonstrators had gathered, security forces were seen taking extensive precautions. Following the ceasefire reached on May 14 between government forces and various armed groups in Tripoli, both anti-government and pro-government groups have continued to hold demonstrations on different days. Tensions escalated after the killing of a militia leader from the Stability Support Apparatus on May 12, triggering armed confrontations. The Defense Ministry’s 444th Brigade later took control of the militia’s headquarters in Abu Salim. On May 14, clashes broke out between government forces and the Rada militia, one of Tripoli’s most powerful armed groups. The Defense Ministry announced a ceasefire later that day to protect civilians. According to Tripoli Municipality Health Officer Muhammad Abdulwahab, the fighting left six dead and 70 wounded over two days. Writing by Ayse Elif Erdis.
