The Loong Boat Festival, one of China’s most important traditional holidays, is marked across the country with dragon boat races, cruises, and various cultural activities. But in this southern town, residents took part in a lesser-known custom that reflects the region’s distinctive cultural identity. Unlike the more formal dragon boat races held in larger cities, this event was filled with spontaneity and excitement. Participants climbed onto moving boats, danced, and hurled water at one another — creating a festival scene both wild and joyful. The rare ritual, documented on site, highlights how different parts of China celebrate shared traditions in their own way.
