VARIOUS OF SAILBOAT MADLEEN IN SEA / PALESTINIAN FLAGS ON MADLEEN / PEOPLE CARRYING PALESTINIANS FLAGS / PEOPLE WAITING ON COAST AND HOLDING PALESTINIAN FLAGS CATANIA, ITALY - JUNE 1, 2025: A civilian vessel from the Freedom Flotilla Coalition is preparing to depart from Catania, Italy, as part of an effort to challenge the Israeli blockade on Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid to Palestinian civilians. The sailboat 'Madleen', which is named after Gaza's only fisherwoman, will be docked at the port of San Giovanni Li Cuti from May 30 to June 1 before setting course for the Palestinian enclave. Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg is also expected to join the departure event in Catania, lending support to the flotilla’s mission to protest the Israeli siege and highlight the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Israel’s blockade of Gaza has created a man-made famine, according to the UN. With border crossings effectively closed to humanitarian aid for over 90 days, Gaza’s 2.4 million residents have been plunged into hunger. Rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, Israel has pursued a devastating offensive in Gaza since October 2023, killing over 54,400 Palestinians, most of them women and children. Aid agencies have warned about the risk of famine among the enclave's population. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war crimes against civilians in the enclave.
