Indonesia landslide victims retrieved from debris
Landslide victims were recovered from debris following the collapse at a mine in Indonesia.
Footage shows emergency responders carrying a body retrieved from the rubble on Mount Kuda in West Java.
Sheets of earth had slid down the rock face, burying dozens of workers and several heavy machines at the site on Friday, May 30.
Officials confirmed that at least 14 people were killed and 11 others injured. Eight individuals remain missing and are currently being searched for.
Authorities said the mine had an official permit valid until November 2025. The owner is in police custody for questioning.
West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi has reportedly ordered operations to cease following the landslide.
He said in a video statement: 'Some time ago, before I became governor, I visited the mining site.
'I found that the mining operations were very dangerous and did not meet proper safety standards for the workers.
'But because it has been licensed, I did not have the authority to stop it, and the mining went on.
'Now I have received tragic news that more than 10 people may be buried in the landslide.'
Officials said evacuation efforts were ongoing.
On May 16, a landslide at a gold mine in the Arfak Mountains of West Papua Province killed at least six workers and left 14 others missing.
Abdul Muhari, spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), said floodwaters swept through a camp used by miners.
Another landslide struck a mining site in Marapit Village, Kapuas Regency, Central Kalimantan, on April 29, burying four gold miners alive.
On July 7 last year, 12 workers were killed after being trapped in a gold mine that was buried by a landslide in Gorontalo Province. The response team had to travel 20 kilometres on foot to reach the site due to severe weather conditions.
Landslides are common in Indonesia, particularly during the rainy season. The risk is further exacerbated by deforestation and illegal mining activities in remote areas.
