The moment a prisoner in Indonesia escaped after injuring 3 prison officers.
Moments when prisoners in Indonesia escape from prison, 3 officers seriously injured.
A total of 19 prisoners escaped from the Class II B Penitentiary (Detention Center or Prison) in Nabire Regency, Central Papua Province, Indonesia, on Monday, June 2, 2025.
One of the prisoners even attacked 3 officers using a machete, injuring them.
The incident occurred during visiting hours at the Class II B Nabire Penitentiary (Detention Center or Prison) at around 10:30 Eastern Indonesian Time (local time).
The incident began when 2 prisoners pretended to ask permission from the guard. "The two prisoners initially pretended to ask permission to go to the registration room," said Edi Saputra, Head of Nabire Class II B Penitentiary (Detention Center or Prison).
When the officer opened the door, the prisoners then attacked the officers using machetes. The officers were unable to ward off the attack when another group of prisoners took advantage of the chaos.
"When the door was opened by the officer, they immediately attacked and opened the way for 17 other prisoners to escape," he said.
Edi said the perpetrator's attack injured 3 officers of Nabire Penitentiary (detention center or prison). Two of them suffered serious injuries to their hands from the machete, while one other suffered minor injuries.
"The Penitentiary (detention center or prison) is still investigating the origin of the sharp weapons used by the prisoners in the escape. We do not yet know for sure where the machetes came from. It is suspected that they were hidden under clothes during visiting hours," explained Edi.
Edi also suspected that the escape was most likely planned in advance by the prisoners. The method was to disguise themselves and sneak in during visiting hours.
"Most likely this was planned. They took advantage of the gap when two prisoners asked for permission to go to the registration room. When the door was opened, a group of prisoners immediately attacked from behind," he explained.
In the CCTV footage, an inmate is seen at the guard door that connects the inside of the prison with the outside. The inmate is seen wearing a red shirt and black shorts. When being detained by officers, the inmate suddenly attacked with a machete. The officer tried to block the attack using his hands, but was found to be holding back the escaping inmates.
