An alligator was removed from a backyard swimming pool twice on the same day in Florida.

Dramatic footage shows the 7ft intruder cooling off in the water as emergency workers safely evacuated it in Jensen Beach on June 1.

Authorities confirmed that this was the second time that day a gator had been found in a residential pool in the area.

The Martin County Sheriff's Office added: 'This unusual encounter is an important reminder. It's mating season for alligators. During this time, they become much more active and may travel into areas they don't typically frequent, including fully fenced yards like this one.

'It's believed the gator either climbed over or found its way under the fencing.'

Officials urged residents to stay alert.

Florida has a huge wild alligator population estimated to be as many as 1.3 million. They live in rivers, swamps, ponds, and lakes and often appear in front of humans.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission found that female alligators typically do not grow beyond 10ft, while males can reach even larger sizes. The state record stands at 14ft 3.5 inches.
