Gazans risk lives to access aid supplies under Israeli gunfire
Storyline: Palestinians are now forced to take extreme risks to reach humanitarian aid supplies, with Israeli troops opening fire near desperate crowds surging to the limited number of aid distribution point. Israel has allowed a limited amount of aid into Gaza since May 22, with distribution points set up in areas of Gaza under Israeli military control, forcing desperate Palestinians to walk long distances to access them. More critically, obtaining humanitarian aid has now become a life-or-death gamble. At least 31 people were killed and dozens of others seriously injured on Sunday when Israeli forces opened fire near a humanitarian aid distribution point in Rafah, southern Gaza, where residents were gathering to receive aid, the Gaza-based health authority said in a statement. These sites, which are operated by the U.S.-based Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, were meant to be safe havens for those seeking food and crucial necessities. Israel has denied it fired at civilians. Wissam Khaled went with her husband to collect food aid, but the trip nearly cost them their lives and her husband was injured. Nabila Al-Najjar, a mother of five, is among those who refuse to go to the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation’s aid centers. Gazans rely almost entirely on humanitarian aid, which Israel has heavily restricted. Many families have been cut off from regular food supplies, leaving over two million Palestinians facing hunger, amid fear and destruction. Gaza has become "the hungriest place on Earth", a United Nations (UN) spokesperson warned in Geneva on Friday, emphasizing that the entire population is at risk of famine due to severe obstacles to humanitarian aid. Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), told the media that Gaza is the only defined territory in the world where the entire population faces the risk of famine. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Monday that he was appalled by the killing and maiming of Palestinians at the aid distribution center in Gaza. Guterres called for an immediate and independent investigation, stressing the need to hold the perpetrators accountable. Shotlist: Gaza Strip - Recent: 1. This is the reality in Gaza. Instead of returning with food and aid, we come back wounded, carried away." 4. Various of Nabila Al-Najjar with children at refugee camp, tents 5. The Americans are no better than the Israelis. They might even be worse." 6. Various of Um Ayman Amsha, children at refugee camp 7. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Um Ayman Amsha, displaced Palestinian: "We hear there's aid in Rafah and Netzarim, but we don't see any. I can't afford to go there, and we're too scared of what could happen. My grandchildren go to sleep hungry. Two nights ago, the youngest woke up crying from hunger. I wept with her." 8. Various of tents at refugee camp. [Restrictions : No access Chinese mainland]
