Pilgrims are required to wear the simple, white Ihram garb in a spirit of equality to enter the inner courtyard (sahn) near the Kaaba. However, those who have completed Umrah are allowed to perform tawaf without ihram on the mosque’s first floor and rooftop. Others, dressed in everyday or traditional clothing, prayed in the outer courtyards, with some feeding the pigeons that gathered around the sacred site. As evening fell, many pilgrims returned to their accommodations via buses departing from the Gaza Garage transport hub. The Hajj pilgrimage is the fifth pillar of the Islamic faith – a ritual that must be performed by all Muslims, if financially viable, at least once in their lives. The ritual includes several rituals meant to symbolize the essential concepts of the Islamic faith and to commemorate the trials of the Prophet Abraham and his family. The Hajj culminates with Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, where Muslims worldwide perform Qurbani, the practice of sacrificing livestock during the Eid festival.
