The handmade Bou Saadi knife, rooted in a history stretching back centuries, is highly sought during the Eid period for its effectiveness in both sacrificial slaughter and skinning. Bladesmiths use stainless steel for the blade and ivory or oak for the handle, often crafting a leather sheath that extends the knife's lifespan up to 50 years. Some historians trace the knife’s origins to the 11th-century migration of the Banu Hilal tribe from the Najd region to North Africa, while others believe it gained prominence during Algeria’s struggle for independence when it was secretly forged by blacksmiths to aid resistance fighters.
