British tourist, 58, dies after falling from 25ft high hotel walkway in Phuket
A British tourist died in a drunken fall from a 25ft high hotel walkway in Phuket.
Kerry Bruce, 58, was returning to her room after a night out with her partner on the Thai holiday island in the early hours ofJune 4.
The guest from Doncaster, South Yorkshire, was said to have downed several drinks before trudging up the outdoor stairway to her room.
However, she was said to have lost her balance and tumbled off the edge of the unprotected walkway.
The holidaymaker smashed onto a corridor some 25ft below. She was still breathing when found by hotel staff, who called emergency services for help.
Medics said Kerry suffered fractures on her neck and limbs, as well as severe facial bruising. She was strapped onto a rescue board to be taken to the Patong Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Police Lieutenant Chittawan Phengkaew, deputy chief of investigation at the Patong Police Station, said Kerry had dinner with her spouse, Stuart Raynor, before the incident.
He said: ‘There was no one present at the scene. We learned that she was returning after having a meal with her partner at a restaurant and may have had a few drinks.
‘They arrived at the hotel and she went up to the room while the man went elsewhere. When she was walking up the stairway, the security camera captured her going up alone, but it did not record the moment she fell.
‘That stairway did not have a railing, and she plunged from the fifth floor to the second floor. When a hotel employee found her, they informed her partner and rescue workers. The rescue team then informed the police.
‘As for the cause, she might have fallen due to being drunk. We do not have the blood alcohol test result, so we cannot confirm yet. We have already contacted the embassy.'
The fatal fall occurred just days after a Ukrainian tourist also plunged to her death from a hotel on the holiday island.
Veronika Kobzova, 29, was reportedly walking along the edge of an infinity pool when she slipped off the edge. She was rushed to the Chalong Hospital but died in transit.
Police said she had been on an all-night drinking spree with friends before her death.
