VARIOUS OF CHILDREN WASHING SHEEP IN OCEANDAKAR, SENEGAL - JUNE 4, 2025: As Eid al-Adha approaches, one of Senegal’s most striking holiday traditions is once again drawing attention: the washing of sacrificial sheep in the ocean. Muslim feast of the sacrifice, known locally as Tabaski, the festival is preceded by the ritual washing of sheep before they are sold or handed over to their owners — a practice regarded as one of the most important customs of the holiday. While in inland areas sheep are cleaned using buckets of water, in Senegal’s coastal cities they are brought directly to the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. The process, often carried out by children and teenagers, creates vibrant and colorful scenes along the coastline, capturing the festive spirit of the occasion.
