Gaza’s Eid al-Adha overshadowed by war, hunger and despair
SHOTLIST: GAZA, PALESTINE (JUNE 2, 2025) (ANADOLU - ACCESS ALL) 1. DISPLACED PALESTINIAN WOMAN NEHAD ABU AMSHA BAKING BREAD IN OVEN IN STREET/ CHILDREN AROUND HER 2. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) DISPLACED PALESTINIAN WOMAN NEHAD ABU AMSHA SAYING: “I can’t even bring a pair of slippers for my kids to wear. What kind of Eid is this? Where is the joy? They stole the children’s joy. I just want to feed my children. This little boy tells me, ‘I want food. I can’t stay up anymore. I’m lying down.’ Why? Just tell me why. If this is Eid, then there is no Eid. Eid is for those with homes, dignity, and stable lives. But us? Let those Arabs come and see us — those countries who talk about us. This Eid is for them — the Arab countries, Jordan, Egypt, any Arab state. For us, Eid means torment. There is no Eid. No joy. Some have lost their children to martyrdom. Others have lost their legs. A girl has lost her sisters. Is this the Eid you’re talking about? What about the martyrs? The wounded lie around with no medicine, no shelter. There are no painkillers, no treatment. How can we call this Eid? It’s an Eid of screams, a bitter Eid. We are a devastated people, a displaced people. We have nothing. No joy. No celebration. We’re seven people. All day, from 7 a.m. until sunset, we sit — and I ration the water, just a sip. At the end of the day, I say Alhamdulillah, thank Allah I brought a bag of flour for my children. I thank Allah I could afford it. But there are others who can’t. All kinds of people come to me begging, ‘Auntie, give me a loaf of bread. Auntie, just a bite.’ Why did it come to this?” 3. CLOSE SHOT OF BAKED BREADS/ ABU AMSHA BAKING BREADS IN OVEN AS SHE SPEAKS/ DOUGH AND SOUCE BY OVENGAZA, PALESTINE - JUNE 2: Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, who have long been subjected to heavy attacks, starvation, and forced displacement, once again, will observe the upcoming Eid al-Adha under the shadow of the Israeli genocide. The attacks and destruction left by Israel in Gaza since Oct. 7, 2023, erased any signs of joy for the upcoming Eid celebration even before it began. While the city streets, now reduced to rubble, have become places of refuge for Palestinians repeatedly forced to flee, there is no trace of Eid cheer on the faces of those weakened by hunger amid the piles of debris on street corners. This year, Palestinians approach Eid far from the sweet bustle of buying new clothes or preparing sacrifices, living instead in primitive tents where there is no privacy or dignity to shield them from the summer heat or winter cold. Eid arrives amid an atmosphere of constant bombardment, widespread destruction, lack of income, and a complete cutoff of humanitarian aid, while the population struggles to meet the most basic survival needs. Homes in Gaza have been leveled by Israeli airstrikes. Once adorned with Eid decorations, walls and doorways now lie in rubble. Streets that once bustled with families shopping for clothes and gifts are scenes of devastation and grief. Nehad Abu Amsha, a mother of seven displaced from the Jibaliya refugee camp in northern Gaza, says she couldn’t even find shoes for her child. “I can’t even bring a pair of slippers for my kids to wear. What kind of Eid is this? Where is the joy? They stole the children’s joy. I just want to feed my children," she said. "There is no Eid. No joy. Some have lost their children to martyrdom. Others have lost their legs. A girl has lost her sisters. Is this the Eid you’re talking about?," she asked. Adil Shamiye, 79, displaced from Beit Hanoun, called the current situation the worst he has seen in his lifetime. According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, at least 60 children in Gaza have died from malnutrition caused by the Israeli siege since Oct. 7. For 72-year-old Aisha Abu Salah, the situation is equally dire. Living in a tent and in poor health, she says the economic conditions are unbearable. The Israeli army, rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, has pursued a brutal offensive against Gaza since October 2023, killing more than 54,500 Palestinians, most of them women and children. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war crimes against civilians in the enclave.
