Burmese warplanes accidentally bomb own base killing 30 soldiers
Burmese warplanes accidentally killed 30 of their own soldiers in a botched air strike in Myanmar.
Two fighter jets dropped bombs in the region as resistance forces closed in on the Thibabo base in Myawaddy on June 3.
The area was bombarded with explosives, which also blasted the army encampment killing 30 besieged junta troops in friendly fire. The surviving soldiers were reported to have later surrendered to the Karen National Liberation Army.
Footage shows terrified villagers hiding in a shelter as explosions echoed near their homes. Some were seen crossing a river to flee to neighbouring Thailand.
The Thai-Myanmar border has been racked with clashes between the Burmese army and rebel militia in recent weeks, sparking an exodus of thousands of refugees to the Thai border.
Karen soldiers claimed they have successfully occupied all but one Myanmar army base opposite Thailand's Tak province.
Myanmar has fallen into civil war following the removal of democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, with a military coup in 2021.
Soldiers responded with barbaric force on protesting civilians leading to widespread condemnation and financial sanctions. Rebel groups and civilian militias around the country have since been locked in a series of ongoing clashes with the ruling military.
Aung San Suu Kyi has since been jailed for 33 years on politically motivated charges and is likely to die behind bars unless the army is toppled - a tragic end the politician hailed by Barack Obama as an 'inspirational icon of democracy'.
Thailand has propped up the junta - despite publicly advocating for peace - with war loans.
Despite often claiming to be neutral, the Thai establishment has previously allied with the Nazi axis in WWII, supported the Khmer Rouge in the 1970s and aided the American bombing missions in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam during the Indochina Wars.
The brand of duplicitous diplomacy has helped the country to remain relatively stable and prosperous in comparison with its neighbours.
