This is the shocking moment a British pensioner crashed his car through a wall and almost hit a schoolgirl in northeast Thailand.

Nigel Anthony Ellison-Smith, 74, was driving to a coin-operated laundrette when he reportedly lost control of his sedan on June 4.

The retiree from Taplow, Buckinghamshire, was said to have revved his engine as the car stalled shortly before accelerating through a carpark in Udon Thani.

CCTV footage from a nearby grocery store shows the vehicle lurching forward before ploughing through a concrete fence. It shot into a family's patio, narrowly missing a youngster named Gao, 8, who had been colouring on a bamboo bed nearby.

Nigel was said to have emerged from the car unharmed and walked away without speaking to anyone.

Police arrived at the scene after receiving a report at 4 pm. They found the wreckage lodged in the concrete fence.

The car's front bumper was detached and the windscreen was cracked. Inside, both passenger and driver airbags had been deployed.

Police Captain Phao Sangkongplee of the Mueang Udon Thani provincial force said Nigel was found to be living in a studio flat around half-a-mile from the scene.

The officer said: 'We visited the British man's lodging and summoned him and the landlord for questioning. A breathalyser test showed he was not under the influence of alcohol. Police are arranging mediations between the affected parties.'

Homeowner Prayoon Saenwian, 52, said he was inside the house when he was jolted by the crash.

He said: 'Just before the incident, I was sitting in the house looking after the chickens. My niece had been colouring on a bamboo bed. She was just about to ask me for some money to buy snacks when the sedan slammed into the concrete fence.

'It nearly hit her. She was so scared, she was hysterically crying as she ran to me.'

Onlooker Saman Kingpudsa, 65, said Nigel appeared to have been experiencing mechanical problems before the crash.

He said: 'He was revving his engine for about three minutes, the car kept stalling like there was an engine problem. Then suddenly it shot forward from the parking area and crashed into the fence.

'When I went to look, I saw the foreigner grabbing a large amount of money from the car's console before leaving the scene and returning to his accommodation.'

Authorities have towed the damaged car from the home and were facilitating negotiations between the residents and the British pensioner.
