A police officer seen driving a doorless patrol vehicle is facing an internal investigation and possible disciplinary action.

Footage shows the car speeding down the highway with no side panel in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, on June 1.

Reports said the vehicle was involved in a collision with a minibus taxi on the same day.

After the crash, the door had to be removed to free a female Warrant Officer trapped inside.

But rather than abandoning the vehicle, the authority decided to drive it back to the station with the door missing.

Colonel Robert Netshiunda, spokesman for the South African Police Service (SAPS), said: 'Instead of following prescribed procedures, another driver, also a Warrant Officer, drove the vehicle to the station, endangering his life and putting the name and the image of the South African Police Service into disrepute.'

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi added: 'The member who was driving the vehicle, the officer who gave such an unlawful instruction, and anyone else involved in the decision will be subjected to internal disciplinary processes.'
