INTERVIEW WITH PALESTINIAN JOURNALIST OMAR KARIMBRUSSELS, BELGIUM - JUNE 5: The Belgian priest will open his church's doors to those participating in a hunger strike for "justice for Palestine". The Church of St. John the Baptist at the Beguinage, located in the center of Brussels, the capital of Belgium and home to European Union (EU) institutions, will host a significant event for Palestinians suffering from genocide, led by its priest, Daniel Alliet. Known for hosting social responsibility projects for asylum seekers, the homeless, and the poor, the church is preparing to open its doors from June 16 to 21 to those participating in a hunger strike in support of the people of Gaza. A banner reading "Stop the Genocide" has been hung at the entrance of the church, which is known as the "House of Compassion." It was announced that the 81-year-old priest of the church, Daniel Alliet, will also be among those participating in the hunger strike. Gaining national media attention for his compassionate character, Alliet said that if there is no peace in one part of the world, including in the Christian world, then there is no peace anywhere. Motivated by this belief, Alliet said he opened the church doors to the organizers of the hunger strike, emphasizing that something must be done to stop the genocide in Gaza. "What is happening in Gaza is truly inhumane. It has been going on for years. All international law has collapsed there. Hospitals have been completely bombed. Palestine is the country where hunger is most severe. Every Palestinian is facing the danger of dying from hunger," Alliet said. "We made the decision to hold a hunger strike in our church, which represents a struggle for justice and compassion. We are now preparing," he added. The Israeli army, rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, has pursued a brutal offensive against Gaza since October 2023, killing more than 54,600 Palestinians, most of them women and children. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war crimes against civilians in the enclave.
