Austria: Anti-Zionist group symbolically renames 'Theodor Herzl' square in Vienna to 'Gaza'
VIENNA, AUSTRIA - JUNE 5, 2025: Pro-Palestinian activists in Vienna symbolically renamed a city square named after Zionist leader Theodor Herzl to “Gaza Square”, on Thursday, June 5, to protest Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza. During a protest organized by Jewish activist Dalia Sarig-Fellner, participants covered the official sign of the square with posters reading "Gaza Square" and “In memory of the victims of the genocide in Gaza and Zionism since 1948.” The act was meant to criticize Zionist ideology and hold it accountable for the displacement, war crimes, and human rights violations in Palestine. Speaking at the event, lawyer Dr. Astrid Wagner said the symbolic name change was carried out to highlight the ongoing genocide in Gaza and honor its victims. Activist Sarig-Fellner noted that during a ceremony held last year by Vienna’s municipality to honor Theodor Herzl, Austrian Jews were presented as unanimously supporting Israel and Zionism. Fellner criticized this portrayal, highlighting that while Zionist Jews in Austria openly back a state committing genocide, anti-Zionist Jews are instead organizing Vienna’s first anti-Zionist conference during Herzl’s commemoration. She emphasized that, for them, Zionism is a source of shame and affirmed their solidarity with Palestinians in the struggle for a free Palestine. Austrian police ensured that the protest proceeded without interruption, preventing pro-Israel counter-demonstrators from provoking the gathering.
