Torrential rain caused severe floods that submerged streets in northeast Thailand.

The hour-long downpour quickly overwhelmed drainage systems, triggering a 2ft deep deluge in Khon Kaen on June 5.

Video shows locals placing sandbags in front of stores to block the floodwaters. Locals waded through the waterlogged street, which was impassable to motorcycles and light vehicles.

Authorities said the flood caused traffic congestion as motorists were rerouted away from the submerged areas.

The local disaster office dispatched a pump to ease the flooding.

An officer from the regional Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation said: 'We've deployed long-distance water pumps in front of Northeastern University to speed up drainage.

'Three pipes, each more than 500 metres long, will divert water into the main drainage pipes on Mittraphap Road. If the rain stops, we expect to have the water cleared by tonight.'

Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are in their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
