Three Taiwanese nationals were arrested at a Thai airport over a massive online scam in Thailand.

The suspects, not named by officials, were detained when x-ray scans showed 19 phones in their check-in baggage at the Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok on June 3.

Customs officials said the gadgets contained bank account numbers linked to a large-scale call centre scam that caused 'widespread damage in the hundred of thousands of baht' across Thailand.

The trio reportedly operated fake online platforms for shopping, money exchange, and money top-ups. They had entered Thailand for the first time and were found to have criminal records in Taiwan involving gambling, money laundering, and fraud, authorities said.

Police Lieutenant General Panumas Boonyaluck, superintendent of the Immigration Bureau, said: ‘We have revoked the visas of these three suspects as they are a threat to society.

‘We sent them to Immigration Bureau Division 3 and co-ordinated with the police stations in the jurisdictions of each case for further legal action.'

The Immigration Bureau said further investigations were underway to trace other individuals involved.
