WIDE SHOT OF GRAVEYARD KHAN YOUNIS, GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - JUNE 6: Palestinians in the Gaza Strip marked a mournful Eid al-Adha on Friday, June 6, as Israel's military campaign continued unabated, with many families visiting gravesites instead of celebrating the traditional Festival of Sacrifice. In Khan Younis, residents gathered at the local cemetery to pray for loved ones killed in what the International Court of Justice (ICJ) has recognized as a plausible case of genocide. Emotional scenes unfolded as Palestinians stood beside graves, their Eid clothes contrasting sharply with the rows of burial mounds stretching across the war-torn landscape. The holiday, which coincides with the culmination of Hajj, typically involves communal prayers and sacrificial meat distribution. This year marks the second consecutive Eid al-Adha where Gaza's 2.3 million residents face severe food shortages, with UN reports indicating famine-like conditions in northern Gaza. Rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, the Israeli army has pursued a brutal offensive against Gaza since October 2023, killing over 54,600 Palestinians, most of them women and children. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave. Writing by Ayse Elif Erdis.
