Thai schools rehearsed evacuations as skirmishes erupted on the border with Cambodia over a territorial dispute.

The elementary school in Buriram, eastern Thailand, carried out a bomb shelter drill on Thursday amid renewed fears of cross-border military violence.

Footage shows dirt-covered concrete culverts placed around the school as makeshift bunkers in case of a bombing.

School director Oraprin Kamolchit said staff, following orders from the Ministry of Education, have periodically been rehearsing evacuations since similar territorial conflicts in 2011.

She said: 'We've had many concerned parents contact us since the clash. We have been co-ordinating with community leaders to ensure that the school is prepared in the event of an attack.'

Thai and Cambodian forces clashed at the Chong Bok mountain pass in Ubon Ratchathani amid rising tensions over overlapping territorial claims on May 28.

A mother, Nootaen Sitwong, 45, said: 'I'm worried because during the last clashes, 21 bombs fell in our village. If it happens again now, just as the children are starting school, I want to say to the Cambodian government: please think about human lives before doing anything.'

Thailand and Cambodia have been locked in a border dispute since 2008, over a contested area near the 11th-century Preah Vihear Temple.

The disputed region covers 4.6 square miles (12 square kilometres) in the Emerald Triangle, a junction between Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos lacking formal border demarcations.
