Soldiers tested mosquitoes for deadly diseases at an air base in Kansas.

Airmen deployed mosquito traps to catch the illness-carrying insects at the McConnell Air Force Base on June 4.

After collecting the bugs, the entomology crew sorted them into male and female groups. Female mosquitoes feed on blood in order to reproduce, while males do not.

Each group was then tested for the presence of viruses and other health threats.

Officers said the operation is a key step in protecting personnel on base from mosquito-borne diseases.
