NOUAKCHOTT, MAURITANIA - JUNE 6, 2025: Mauritania, a West African country with a 754-kilometer Atlantic Ocean coastline, is home to fishermen who make their living amid the wild waves of the sea. They struggle throughout the day to catch fish, which remains one of the most important sources of income for the people of Mauritania. At daybreak, hundreds of them gather on the shores of the capital, Nouakchott, and set out in colorful boats, often traveling in groups to fish in the ocean. They make their living by selling the fish they catch during their day-long efforts at the local fish market. After returning from a day at sea, fishermen often rest in the shade of their boats to recover from the day’s fatigue.
