OPPOSITION LEADERS ON STAGE CLAPPING THEIR HANDS ROME, ITALY - JUNE 7: Thousands of people gathered in Rome on Saturday, June 7, for a major demonstration organized by Italy's opposition parties, calling for an immediate end to Israeli military operations in Gaza and accusing the Meloni government of complicity. The protest, spearheaded by the Democratic Party (PD), Five Star Movement (M5S), and Green-Left Alliance (AVS), saw participants march from Vittorio Emanuele Square to San Giovanni Square under banners reading "Stop the Gaza Massacre, End Complicity." Palestinian flags dominated the crowd alongside signs condemning Israel's actions. Protesters expressed outrage at the ongoing conflict, with demonstrator Annapaola telling Anadolu: "We're witnessing a genocide. Western democracy fails when it stays silent about Gaza's destruction." She criticized the Italian government's response as "shameful diplomatic evasion" lacking concrete measures like suspending arms trade with Israel. Fellow protester Angelo, a regular at Palestine solidarity events, stated: "This isn't about left or right – it's about stopping a 50-year occupation. When victims become perpetrators, it's a moral collapse." At the concluding rally, opposition leaders delivered strong critiques. PD leader Elly Schlein cited UN figures of "50,000 dead, including 15,000 children," accusing Israel of "ethnic cleansing through starvation." M5S leader Giuseppe Conte denounced government "hypocrisy," asking: "Would 30,000 deaths be acceptable? Recognition of Palestinian statehood is overdue." AVS leaders demanded an end to Italy's military cooperation with Israel, drawing parallels to past sanctions on Gulf states. Organizers claimed over 300,000 attendees, making it one of Italy's largest Gaza protests. Parallel events were held in Milan and Florence, where "BASTA" (Enough) was projected onto Palazzo Vecchio.
