This is the heroic moment a pet Labrador was rescued from a mine shaft in Australia.

The dog, named Ted, and his companion Penny, a Labradoodle, had been missing from their owner's property since Thursday, May 29.

Earlier this week, the pair were finally found on Pronk Track in Trentham. Penny was discovered above ground, while Ted was trapped inside a 27ft (8m) mine shaft on Monday, June 2.

Trentham Fire Brigade Captain David Wheeldon said a fortunate encounter with nearby residents led to the discovery.

Firefighters provided Ted with food and water while preparing for the rescue descent.

Dramatic footage shows the moment rescuers successfully retrieved the pooch from the pit.

The duo were returned to their owners healthy and safe.

Following the incident, the Trentham Fire Brigade worked with Forest Fire Management Victoria to mark nearby mine shafts with pink ribbon and red tape to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
