French husband escapes apartment fire sparked by electric bike explosion
A French husband and his Thai wife escaped an apartment fire sparked by an electric bike explosion in Thailand.
Dandrieu Thierry, 57, and his partner were jolted awake when their e-bike blew up on the balcony of the Diamond Suite Condominium in seaside town Pattaya in the early hours of the morning on June 7.
The couple fled as flames from the burning battery rapidly spread across their second-floor room.
Firefighters were called to the scene at 3:30 am. They found thick smoke pouring out of the building as terrified residents evacuated.
Footage shows the crew hosing down the blaze as plumes of smoke billowed out of the condo. The inferno was extinguished within 30 minutes, and the charred remains of the electric bike were discovered in the carnage.
Police Lieutenant Sakkyaphap Chaidech of the Pattaya City Police Station said: 'According to the tenants, it is believed the fire was caused by a short circuit from an electric motorcycle, which they had left charging overnight. The fire spread and caused damage to almost the entire room.
‘We will contact Chonburi Forensic Police to investigate and determine the actual cause of this fire.'
Bike owner Dandrieu said: 'I had the bicycle on the balcony, and I had the battery inside. And the battery went boom.
'When the battery exploded, the fire touched the small table and the sofa. And the sofa went very quickly because it was plastic.
'After the explosion, I went outside the bedroom, I went into the living room, and I saw the battery sizzling. I tried to put a towel. That stopped it a bit, but it exploded again and it grew out of control. That's when we called the condo security and the firefighters for help.'
A fire department spokesman said there were no injuries or casualties. However, the condo was found to have a faulty alarm system that only sounded after the fire had been put out.
Authorities said an investigation into the explosion was ongoing.
