Customer narrowly escapes being crushed by car hurtling into repair shop
This is the dramatic moment a woman cheated death when an out-of-control truck hurtled into a repair shop in Thailand.
Kannika Kaemkhunthot, 35, was having her motorcycle fixed when a speeding pickup truck ploughed into the roadside business in Samut Prakan on June 7.
Dramatic CCTV footage showed Kannika trying to scramble away as the vehicle screeched toward her and several mechanics. The truck hit parked motorcycles and then crashed into a metal pole near the shop.
Police arrived at the scene after receiving a report at 4:30 pm. They found Kannika injured after a metal awning collapsed on top of her. She was taken to a hospital with an injured back. She was later discharged.
Police Captain Worakrit Pharueang of the Bang Sao Thong District Police Station said: 'After collecting evidence at the scene and questioning relevant individuals, officers performed a blood alcohol on the truck driver, revealed a level of 84 milligrams per cent. He was then taken for processing in accordance with legal procedures.'
The legal blood alcohol limit in Thailand is 50 milligrams per cent.
The driver, Thanatchai Chitra, 26, reportedly admitted that he was driving at high speeds before the crash. He said: 'I was trying to overtake another car but I drove over a pothole on the highway, causing me to lose control. I don't remember how fast I was driving.'
Auto repair shop owner Kung said he was chatting with customers moments before he saw the truck barreling toward them.
He said: 'The woman tried to avoid it too. She managed to dodge the truck, but was hit by flying debris that injured her.'
Authorities have detained Thanatchai to face charges.
Despite being one of the wealthiest countries in Asia, Thailand suffers from chronic underinvestment in its highways and education, contributing to its poor road safety levels. Only a handful of African countries are worse.
Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
