Sand Fleas in Satellite Beach and never in 45 plus years saw them in a colony like this!

Living in Satellite Beach since 1979 I have never seen sand fleas in a colony like this let alone on top of the sand! As you see in the video at the end, sometimes a foot imprint will bring them up and the quickly hid back into the sand.

These creatures along our beaches are harmless even though called “fleas” they do not bite or sting and I used to play with them as a kid. Fishermen use them for bait and birds dig them up along the shoreline for food.

These were very small ones and could see this from the distance and had to see what it was! It was after a rainstorm and at low tide, so not sure what made them come to the surface like that. I took the video and shared it on a local fb group and it went viral!
