A massive fire engulfed homes in Indonesia, leaving thousands of residents homeless.

The blaze broke out in Kapuk Muara, Penjaringan, North Jakarta, on Friday afternoon, June 6, at around 12:18 pm.

Dramatic footage shows thick plumes of smoke rising from the burning residential area.

Authorities confirmed that approximately three hectares were affected, with more than 500 houses destroyed. The flames were fully extinguished by 11:15 pm the same day.

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said that the fire began in one of the semi-permanent structures and quickly spread to nearby homes.

The governor added: 'Currently, approximately 800 families or around 3,200 people are affected, with 1,900 people already in evacuation locations.

'We focus on the victims first. After that, we will consider relocation through a detailed meeting about addressing the impact of this fire.'

No fatalities were reported. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
