Police motorbike rider injured when barrier falls from the back of truck
This is the shocking moment a police officer crashed into a road barrier that fell from the back of a truck.
Police Lance Corporal Santiparb Kaewluang was riding his motorbike when he hit the obstacle in Samut Prakan on the outskirts of Bangkok, Thailand, on June 8.
Dashcam footage shows the unfastened orange plastic barrier falling onto the road as Santiparb was travelling to the scene of an accident.
A red car to Santiparb's left blocked the barrier from his view. He then crashed into the object and slammed into the ground while his motorbike skidded across the highway.
Paramedic Thanakorn Phuttabut, who was passing by, tended to the injured cop and carried him to Paolo Hospital Samut Prakan. The officer suffered grazes and bruises and was discharged shortly after.
He said: 'I was riding my motorcycle when I saw a traffic jam. There was someone injured lying on the road, so I stopped to help. I noticed he had hit a road barrier.
'When I asked the truck driver, he said the wind caused the barrier to fall. From what I saw, there weren't any ropes to secure them at all. I later found out the injured man was a police officer.'
Police fined the truck driver for allegedly letting the object fall onto the road and causing an accident.
Despite being one of the wealthiest countries in Asia, Thailand suffers from chronic underinvestment in its highways and education, contributing to its poor road safety levels. Only a handful of African countries are worse.
Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
