-OFF KERALA, INDIA — RELEASED ON JUNE 10, 2025 — RESTRICTION: USERS MUST CREDIT "INDIAN NAVY" HANDOUT — EDITORIAL USE ONLY — Fire and explosions persist on a Singapore-flagged ship as rescue operations by the Indian navy and coast guards entered a second day on Tuesday, June 10. The 270-meter-long vessel WAN HAI 503, with a draft of 12.5 meters, left Sri Lankan capital Colombo on June 7 and was expected to arrive in India's financial capital Mumbai on Monday. The vessel met with an accident about 144 kilometers (90 miles) off the coast of the southern Indian state of Kerala. The vessel reported an internal "container explosion" and resultant major fire onboard. Subsequently, the navy and Indian Coast Guard deployed ships and a Dornier-type aircraft to provide necessary assistance to the injured crew members and also to bring the fire under control. The navy rescued 18 out of 22 crew members. Four crew are missing from the time of explosion and their fate is being ascertained by assets deployed, according to officials. The coast guard said fires and explosions persist from “mid ships to the container bay ahead of the accommodation block." On Monday, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority said the vessel with 22 crew members on board was carrying over 650 containers. The authority on Tuesday said it released the “dangerous cargo onboard” the vessel.
